Yes, I know, it’s hard to pronounce if you are not German. What is it? It is a flat, spiced cookie, like gingerbread, with rock sugar pieces and spices. I do not know which ones because every company has a secret recipe—the ones we are selling come from a renowned German confectionery company in Aachen.
This is also a treat for everyone on a vegan diet!
Crispy baked, full of aroma through noble spices and rock sugar, the dough base consists of flour, water, and sweeteners without fats of all kinds. The sweeteners used for the dough are mainly brown sugar, rock sugar, sugar beet syrup, and honey. The spice mixture consists of cinnamon, anise, cloves, cardamom, real coriander, pimento, and orangeade, with the percentage of the seasoning mixture remaining secret.
The term “printe” developed from the English “print” and the Dutch “prent,” a term also used in the Aachener Dialect. It stands for “tool for pressing” or “pressed image” or “up-print.” The name refers to the use of artfully carved and printed wooden models into which the dough was inserted and pressed during the production of the then-created bread introduced in the 15th century.
According to a new recipe, only the prints produced in the city of Aachen from about 1820 onwards are considered original Aachener Prints and certified by the European Union as a product with a protected geographical indication.
