Turkish Style Black Tea – Ceylon OP-A “Alla Turca”
We stumbled upon this distinctive Turkish style black tea and were instantly hooked.
Sourced from the south of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), this OP-A grade tea stands out with its large, open, twisted leaves in dark black-grey tones. The bold leaf style is quite different from standard Ceylon teas and is intentionally crafted to resemble the tea traditionally used in Turkey.
Once brewed, the infusion is a rich red-brown, with a strong, full-bodied character that holds up beautifully to the traditional Turkish way of brewing.
How is Turkish tea different?
It’s less about the tea type and more about the preparation. Turkish tea is famously strong and is often brewed in a double teapot (çaydanlık), similar to a Russian samovar method.
But don’t worry — you don’t need special equipment. A small teapot and a kettle will do the job nicely.
How to brew Turkish style tea without a double teapot:
– Brew a strong concentrate by using plenty of tea and letting it steep for around 15–20 minutes.
– Pour a little into a glass (traditionally a tulip-shaped one).
– Top up with freshly boiled water to dilute to taste.
– Sweeten with sugar if you like.
